The Prežihov Voranc Cottage is a memorial museum
dedicated to Lovro Kuhar (1893–1950), a Slovenian writer whose pen name was
Prežihov Voranc. The cottage is located in Preški Vrh over Kotlje. There are great
views of the Uršlja Gora Mountain and the Hotulja Valley from the cottage.
The cottage is a characteristic building of a
small-scale farmer from Koroška. From the ethnographic perspective, the cottage
is interesting due to the layout of the rooms and the bedroom, making the
cottage a typical representative of a house with an open-hearth kitchen. In the
cottage, some biographical and literary fragments are displayed, telling a
story about Prežih's work and life at a young age. The cottage and its
surroundings give a feel of history at the time of Prežih's life, as well as
the life of his fictional characters.
The Krauper granary dates back to the 19th century
and was formerly a part of the Krauper homestead. It is now located at the
Prežihov Voranc Cottage's farmyard. Granaries are typical for homesteads, used
for storing grain and meat products. The Krauper granary is a wooden building
with a cellar and a typical roofed balcony ("gank"). Its decorative
details make it a fine monument of farmhouse architecture, which is why the
cottage and the granary are certainly worth visiting.
A mighty bronze statue of Prežihov Voranc stands
over the Prežihov Voranc Cottage, made by Stojan Batič, an academic sculptor.
All those who would like to learn more about the
life of Lovro Kuhar – Prežihov Voranc are kindly invited to have a chat with
Metka Petrič, Kuhar's granddaughter. She will shed light on her family history
and the memory of her grandpa.
