Themed paths

Spice up a visit to one of the sights with a walk or a hike, as the Koroška offers a number of themed paths, which teach the visitors about the local heritage. You can head out to the Peca underground, hike along the rivers, through the forests and the gorges. Many paths will also lead you to hill farms and mountain hamlets as well as beautiful vantage points.

Themed Path in Peca Underground

The themed hiking path into the heart of Mount Peca, in a tourist mine and a museum, runs through tunnels and dugouts made by miners 350 years ago. The tour begins in front of the UNESCO Karavanke Geopark Info Centre in Mežica, where the visitors take an authentic railway to the mine, followed by a walk along the themed guided path. The path includes an exhibition of numerous items – mining equipment used by miners in various historical periods. The subterranean mining path is open all year long. The path has been selected as the best themed path in the Koroška region in 2016.

Kope Themed Hiking Path

The popular path between the Kope Mountain and Tourist Centre and the Ribniška Koča cabin is set up as a themed hiking path, equipped with information on the Pohorje characteristics. The path is about five kilometres long (one way) and suitable for families with children as well as seniors due to its mild terrain.

You can use the Ribniška Koča cabin or the multi-purpose Kope Centre facility as starting points. The latter complements the path with a modern multimedia presentation of Pohorje in the information centre, while in front of the facility stands a real skorjanka, a dwelling covered with bark that was once home to the Pohorje foresters. Near the Ribniška Koča cabin stands the Ribniško Jezero Lake, which is also worth a visit.

How was the lake really created? Walk up to the lake and find out! And during the walk you will learn about the Pohorje plains, who lives there, who dwells in the nearby forests, how did the people of Pohorje live in the past centuries, and everything you need to know about the Jezernik legend, by skimming through wooden books located on the benches along the path.

The path has been selected as the best themed path in the Koroška region in 2015.

Plešivec Forest and Tourist Trail

The circular hiking path runs under the mighty treetops of the forests, passing by the pastures, meadows and posts, set up for rest and refreshment. The path begins in the Suhi Dol settlement and ascends through the picturesque Kaštel gorge, passing the Plešivški Mlin mill house, the remains of a manor and then descends to the starting point, passing the ruins of a household of the parents of the first designer of space flights: Herman Potočnik Noordung.

Stari Grad Forest and History Educational Trail

The Stari Grad forest and history educational trail is a walking and educational path about 3 kilometres long, which runs through the forests above the Radlje ob Dravi settlement. The path is special for its picturesque characteristics of the isolated limestone karstic world, mighty trees and the Mahrenberg ruins (Stari Grad) at an impressive location. Its highlight is the ascent to Stari Grad, which opens up a beautiful view of Radlje, Pohorje and the Drava Valley. The path is well marked with signs depicting the forest and castle ruins symbol.
