Collection of Farming Tools and Chores in Libeliče

Tools were found in barns, granaries and attics. They were used for different farm chores and now reveal many secrets of the people from the countryside.

A traditional agricultural holding, typical of the period from the 2nd half of 19th century up to around 1970 in the area of the current local communities Libeliče, Libeliška Gora in Gorče, is presented in the renovated section of the parish barn in Libeliče. The incentive for arranging the collection came from the local people. They wanted to preserve mostly forgotten items from barns, granaries, cellars and attics.

The exhibition is based on work phases of a farmer shown in different seasons: Shrovetide, Easter, protection of the crops, medicinal herbs, builder's treat, parish patron saint, flax scutching, yarn, pig-cutting feast, Christmas, trade and important chores: the Nones, common carting away the manure to the field, ploughing, sowing, hoeing, haymaking, harvesting, threshing, harvesting of crops, cider processing (pressing), pasture, strewing, looking after the livestock, cart driving. Items of interest include: “škajdrovc” – a stand with a blade for cutting fodder, foot-operated threads for blowing groats, “pokšlite” – a horse-drawn cart for transporting hay, “rolovc” – a roll for pull carts for rolling the fields, electric fence from the early 1950s, “preša” – an oil press, typical Libeliče “cejna” (a wicker basket), etc.
The presentation emphasises the “path” of grains by showing procedures from sowing and weeding to harvesting and threshing. The presentation of threshing including dummies at work and tools used illustrates one of the phases from grain to bread – an essential food of traditional country people since all their efforts were reflected in the food stocks produced. Even today, rye bread is considered an important part of the local diet. (summarised from: kpm.si)
