Slovenj Gradec is a cultural hub of the Mislinja Valley and the oldest town in Koroška, as it was granted town rights as early as 1267. Its pleasant location, sheltered between Uršlja Gora and Pohorje, offers visitors well-maintained hiking and cycling trails. The surrounding area, dotted with excellent farm stays, also offers thematic and mountain trails leading to diverse and differently demanding peaks.
The air is scented with the smell of honey as sweets and honey bread have been produced locally by the Perger family since 1757. Their museum offers a glimpse into the colourful past and wide assortment of unique products.
The town is known for its artists, cultural and social events, as well as the new swimming complex Aqualatio. The Koroška Regional Museum, and the Hugo Wolf Museum are especially worth visiting. Its vibrant cultural activity has earned the town a strong international reputation, so much so that in 1989 the United Nations awarded it the honorary title Peace Messenger City. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška (KGLU) focuses on visual art from the mid-20th century onward and plays an active social role by addressing often overlooked issues. As a museum of national importance and part of an international network, KGLU preserves mobile cultural heritage while emphasizing educational programs that foster learning and critical thinking.
In the town, you will find several boutique accommodations tailored to individual guests. Bicycles can also be rented at various locations for independent exploration. In addition to numerous awards for tidiness, Slovenj Gradec has also received the Slovenia Green Destination – Bronze certificate.
In the wider surroundings of the town, you can discover interesting sacral sites. Through glass floors, St. George reveals a glimpse into the past, while the Church of St. Pancras above the old square offers an insight into the life of nobles in the Middle Ages. Together with the church on Homc Hill, they form a mythical triangle said to hold secret powers.
Each summer, Slovenj Gradec’s town centre comes alive with film and music. Visitors can enjoy short films from around the world under the stars at Rotenturn Castle, with live music before and after the screenings. A few days earlier, the Zebra Festival delights young audiences with a colourful mix of animated films.
Step back into the Middle Ages, when lords ruled and steel was forged! During the Medieval Prelude (Srednjeveški preludij), the centre of Slovenj Gradec comes alive with music, food, and crafts. Watch blacksmiths at work, explore knights’ weapons and curious torture devices, enjoy the bird show and jester’s tricks, and treat yourself to sweet delights from Perger 1757 confectionery.
